HTTP 413 – Content Too Large
The request body is larger than the server is willing or able to process.
Common use case
Returned when a file upload or JSON payload exceeds a server or proxy's configured size limit, e.g. NGINX's client_max_body_size.
Example
HTTP/1.1 413 Content Too Large
{"error":"File exceeds the 10MB upload limit"}History
Originally named "Request Entity Too Large" in HTTP/1.1 (RFC 2068, 1997); renamed to "Content Too Large" in RFC 9110 (2022) as part of a broader terminology cleanup.
Did you know?
The rename from "Request Entity" to "Content" reflects HTTP/1.1's wider move away from the term "entity" in favour of "content" - the meaning didn't change, only the label.
