HTTP 500 – Internal Server Error
A generic error indicating the server encountered an unexpected condition it could not handle.
Common use case
The catch-all for unhandled exceptions, bugs, or crashes in application code - anything the server didn't anticipate and couldn't map to a more specific error.
Example
HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
<html><body>Something went wrong</body></html>History
Part of the original HTTP/1.0 specification, RFC 1945 (1996).
Did you know?
It is the status code uptime monitors treat with the most urgency - a spike in 500s almost always means a real bug or outage, not a client mistake.
